The Alcohol Rehab Facility

Other "non-traditional” alcohol treatment protocols frequently take place in an alcohol rehab facility or in a hospital and are seen as providing treatment techniques that are unrelated to the 12-step treatment line of attack.

The Alcohol Rehab Facility: Counseling and Medications

Most of the non-12-step alcohol treatment approaches occur in a hospital setting or in an alcohol rehab facility that features rehabilitation techniques that are rooted in the administration of drugs along with comprehensive counseling and support.

What is more, some of the more effective alcohol rehabilitation protocols are more wide-ranging than others and typically focus on how the alcohol abuser or alcoholic will cope with relationship issues after he or she completes rehabilitation, attains sobriety, and returns home.

Not only this, but some of the more productive non-twelve-step alcohol rehabilitation programs function from a holistic framework that helps problem drinkers identify, address, and work through some of the vital issues that probably led to their alcohol problems in the first place.

Some of these pivotal factors include the following:  poor coping skills, spirituality quandaries, poor anger management capabilities, unemployment, grief, poor interpersonal relationship skills, career indecision, personal loss, poor financial management skills, and pain.

The Necessity For Outpatient Follow-Up Counseling

When an individual undergoes alcohol therapy, it is imperative to address what he or she is going to do after he or she has completed the rehabilitation course of action.

Some of the better known and more productive alcohol rehabilitation facilities, for instance, launch outpatient therapy and counseling follow-up for one year after the inpatient part of treatment has been completed.  Stated more precisely, the more wide-reaching and professional-oriented alcohol recovery clinics focus on treatment approaches that are created and implemented for lasting success rather than on quick and easy short-term approaches.

According to substance abuse research, most residential alcohol abuse rehabilitation programs begin with a thorough assessment of the person's drinking situation.

The Significance of The Treatment Environment

The treatment environment in which an alcoholic or alcohol abuser finds himself or herself is an essential rehab consideration.

Some of the more thorough alcohol rehab facilities, for example, provide an involving, inspiring, comfortable, productive, and harm-free atmosphere that fosters effective and long-term treatment success.

While the majority of alcohol rehabilitation programs can be relatively expensive, especially those that involve residential, in-patient treatment, the more thorough and results-oriented alcohol rehabilitation facilities typically place financial further down their priority list and consequently limit the number of individuals who are accepted for therapy.

This is more of a "treatment" decision and less of a "profit" calculation so that staff can provide the compassion, effort, resources, and time that top-quality alcohol rehabilitation requires.

You might think you can quit drinking at any time. Many people who have alcohol problems do quit for periods of days, weeks, or even months before they start drinking again. But unless you can consistently keep your drinking under control and not fall back into unhealthy patterns, you need professional help.

Characteristics of an Effective Alcohol Rehab Facility

The following typifies some of the more important features of effective alcohol recovery protocols that are undertaken in alcohol rehab facilities:

  • Private detox services
  • Doctor prescribed medications to help patients avoid alcohol relapse
  • A supportive, professional, and results-oriented staff
  • Success rates well beyond the national averages
  • Hospital and non-hospital treatment approaches
  • Competitive pricing
  • Programs with varying time periods and length of treatment approaches that are tailored to the needs of each specific client
  • Hotel or treatment facility suites for out-of town patients
  • Outpatient options that are individualized to fit the financial status, the personality, and the needs of each client
  • Comprehensive night and day therapeutic and counseling programs
  • The administration of medications to help manage and control alcohol withdrawal symptoms
  • Hospital and non-hospital rehabilitation protocols
It is not clear why some people develop alcohol abuse or dependence problems and others do not, although experts know that alcoholism often runs in families. People with depression or other mental health conditions also tend to be more likely to abuse alcohol.

The Alcohol Rehab Facility:  Conclusion

Several of the "traditional” alcohol rehab methodologies are built on the 12-step treatment approach that was started by Alcoholics Anonymous.  Other, less traditional alcohol rehabilitation approaches, however, have emerged.  These alternative programs frequently concentrate less on considerations such as a "higher power," group support, and group meetings and more on research-oriented, empirically validated therapeutic methods that feature the administration of doctor prescribed medications in conjunction with intensive therapy and counseling, support, and a solid, doable follow-up treatment program.

Many of the more professional non-twelve-step alcohol rehab programs are undertaken in rehab hospitals or in an alcohol rehab facility such as an alcohol rehab center.  Such rehab facilities are often staffed with compassionate, supportive, and highly competent healthcare professionals who attempt to do everything in their power to help their clients learn more successful relationship, decision-making, coping, and "life" skills; help them recover from their excessive drinking; and help them restore their lives.

Basically, people use substances such as alcohol and other drugs because they like the way these substances make them feel. Pleasure is a powerful force. Your brain is wired so that if you do something that feels good, you will probably want to do it again. All drugs that are addicting can activate and affect the brain's pleasure circuit.

According to the American Medical Association, there is strong scientific evidence suggesting that even modest alcohol consumption in late childhood and adolescence can result in permanent brain damage.  To the extent that these research findings are valid, it consequently means that our alcohol and drug abuse education and prevention efforts are in need of a major overhaul and need to be upgraded, updated, and made more relevant to today's students.
